This would change if they would openly encourage political violence or meddle with daily politics as other right-wing bands do. I, being somewhat of a leftist, still love to listen to them because I respect the beauty of their work above politics. So, darkwood is definitely a right-wing band, not only by virtue of tolerating fascist and nationalist fan base, but also from themselves. On the other hand, their romanticism calls for a retreat into the local and private, the internal worlds, and seems to draw inspiration from the “hidden Germany” poetic circle of Stefan George, which had an ambivalent position towards national socialism - while united in the desire for a new civilisation and despise of the modern, urban-industrial world, the George circle also was deeply disgusted by the beast-like biologistic anthropology, the rawness and brutality and the mass political nature of the movement. They also glorify Codreanu and try to inspire a sense of respect for the German soldier in WW2 without addressing the crimes committed by both government and army. Also they use a lot of antisemitic cliches like the wandering, nationless people and the opposition between “German” creating, romantic spirit vs (unoutspokenly Jewish) opportunism, materialism as in “der Schaffende” or “Wintermärchen”. It’s especially visible in their German language songs, like Notwendfeuer “ardently sounds the Teutonic voice in our blood”, Lied am Feuer “where is the the wood still void of foreign songs?”, One-eyed god “who told us we’re the superior beings? What other race works like joinery?”, Wintermärchen „I despise the one that never knew his fatherland (ok the German word Heimat is difficult to translate!)”. ![]() They clearly are, and their fan base for most parts also is. I wouldn't be surprised if they were in dubious circles, upfront patriotism is still kind of taboo in Germany. I don't want to listen to music by idiots, but where does it start, where does it end? So yeah, they do have some weird views, but personally, I don't see anything too bad. They are explicitly supportive of people of other nationalities, because they too are only a victim of the "banks" - that is left, right, whatever. ![]() Their "patriotic vision" is apparently everybody going back to heathen beliefs and being a patriot. I read one book by him and noticed that Darkwood's lyrics were incredibly similar. I did not find anything racist or antisemitic, they are more influenced by the "conservative revolution" movement, like the writer Ernst Jünger. But with all of these things, a lot of mainstream politicians aren't really better. I guess they have some implicit anti-americanism, American influence is at least one of the topics that they deal with on one of their albums. I read some interviews, they basically have some leanings that you find in both wings, like being against "the banks".
